But now scientists have discovered what they call Neuroplasticity and they refer to it as the “Discovery of the decade.”

Basically, what this new discovery means is that our brains are more elastic and mouldable as we previously thought.

Wikipedia explains it like this:

Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, is an umbrella term that encompasses both synaptic plasticity and non-synaptic plasticity—it refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses due to changes in behaviour, environment, neural processes, thinking, emotions, as well as changes resulting from bodily injury. Neuroplasticity has replaced the formerly-held position that the brain is a physiologically static organ, and explores how - and in which ways - the brain changes throughout life.”

This proves that using brain training, you can release whatever is holding you back and reach your true potential faster and easier than ever before because thinking, learning and doing, changes not only the brain’s functional anatomy, but it’s physical anatomy as well.

There is a part of our brain known as the hippocampus and it plays important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation.

In a study done in the year 2000, it was discovered that the size of the hippocampus in London cab drivers correlated with the length of time they’d been driving taxis.

The reason for this is believed to be because of the heavy learning involved in memorising so many different routes.

At the same time, London bus drivers were found to have a smaller hippocampus because their routes were so routine and mundane.

In another study on German medical students, it was discovered that the students studying for exams, had fostered changes in the parietal cortex and the posterior hippocampus which are parts of the brain involved in memory and learning, while students not studying for exams, had not.

Because our brains have the ability to change and to be moulded like clay, even basic thinking, if done repeatedly (like meditation), can have a huge impact on happiness, wealth and success.

When you stimulate your brain with new thoughts or behaviours, you stimulate changes in the brain which increases connections between neutrons.

These new connections become new ideas, which create a new internal “map” of reality.

And once this internal “map” changes, the outer world magically changes to match it.

What Does This Mean For You?

This is great news for everyone because it means that you can deliberately change your brain and transform your life.

Sadly though, our brain doesn’t want to change and prefers to stay the way it is because it’s easy and requires no effort.

That’s why changes have to be deliberate because:

  • Your brain fights changes because it’s designed to protect you.
  • Fears (real or imagined) are always responded to with the “fight or flight” instinct which is bad if the fears aren’t real.
  • Your brain is lazy and will stay the same and eventually deteriorate, unless you challenge it on a consistent basis.
  • The lazier you are, the lazier your brain becomes.

But it isn’t all bad news because:

  • Your brain can grow new connections which trigger new beliefs and attitudes which can transform your life.
  • Your brain can perform complicated tasks at an unconscious level.
  • You’re never too old to take control of your brain and your life.
  • Your brain is pliable and can be re-trained to make you happier, wealthier and more successful.

But you must take deliberate steps to make it happen.
